While retirement may seem a long way off (especially given the fact that the average age for retirement raises year on year), the sooner you begin to plan for this momentous occasion, the better – especially if you’re planning on retiring abroad. With that in mind, here are some simple tips you can use to prepare for your retirement – and bring your dreams to life!
Sort out your finances.
One of the easiest ways to prepare for retirement is to focus on building a retirement income for yourself. After all, the more money you set aside, whether that be earned from your job or through making smart investments, the more fun you can have as a retiree. You can also rest easy knowing you have enough money set up to support yourself as you age.
If you find it hard to save money, set up a separate savings account with Evolve Bank & Trust, so that you are less inclined to spend this money. You can also then start earning interest on the money you set aside so that you’ll have even more money to play with once you retire.
Pick up some hobbies.
As your retirement draws closer, it’s time to think about how you want to spend your time. After years caught up in the 9-5 grind, your immediate plans may be to do nothing at all – which is great, but after a while, you’ll find that you get bored. Furthermore, various studies have shown that picking up a hobby in retirement is great for both your physical and mental health. For example, “with consistent engagement in hobbies, elderly people can combat feelings of loneliness, boredom, and social isolation and enhance their wellbeing, self-esteem and life satisfaction.” Fortunately, there are millions of hobbies or activities you can explore during this time in your life – in fact, you may even want to start your own business.
Make your health a priority.
As we get older, we begin to notice that our body is limited in ways that it never has been before. For example, you may find that you aren’t as quick or agile as you once were. While this is a perfectly natural sign of aging, you can stay active for longer by making physical wellness a bigger part of your life.
You should also begin to make your health a priority by managing your diet and staying on top of any medication or healthcare appointments, and by taking care of your mental health. A great way to do that is to look at how to improve medication adherence. There are many health products that can help you to stay on top of your medication and make sure you don’t forget to take what you need when you need it.
Have a routine in place.
While you may be planning on throwing away your morning alarm – developing a ‘routine’ to follow as a retiree can also come in handy. This is because it provides you with a sense of structure that you will otherwise lose when you no longer have to go to and from work each day. Furthermore, this “creates a sense of familiarity and control that can reduce your stress levels and help you feel more in control of your time and life generally.” Not to mention, without having a clear routine in place, you may struggle to figure out how to spend your time, meaning you spend more time at home, bored than you’d like to!
