Four Tips for Better Truck Driver Retention
There is nothing harder in a business than hiring new people. When it comes to hiring truck drivers especially, the recruitment is always something that takes some time. If you want to cut your costs but maintain your retention strategies, you have to consider what you’re doing to make sure that your people feel like they want to stay in their role- Truck Driver Retention.
The trucking industry has high demands and these demands are increasing every year. Whether you hire hazmat-endorsed CDL drivers or you are hiring long-distance truckers, it’s your responsibility to keep them happy in their jobs. The retention budget should be bigger than your hiring budget so that your people feel like they are being well looked after. So, with that in mind, here are four great tips for retaining your truck drivers.
- Make a point of showing people that you actually care. If you want to tell people that you value your drivers, then you have to walk the talk. One of the biggest issues that truck drivers come across is a lack of respect from their employers. If you want to ensure that your drivers don’t feel that way, then you have to show people that you actually care about them. Drivers always want to know that they are being thanked for a role that often feels thankless, and you should be aware of this if you want people to keep it together!
- Put your hands in your pockets. Paying your truck drivers is a must, of course, but you should think about ensuring that you are paying above market rates. Your truck drivers will always find jobs, but you want to make sure that they don’t leave you because of pay reasons. You should think about higher pay rates on weekends and even when the pay rate seems fair, look at upping it if you can. Fair is one thing, but you should want to be competitive.
- Upgrade the technology you have been using. Some tech updates make the lives of your truckers a lot simpler, and you should think about upgrading the technology you’ve got so you can make the life of your truckers far, far easier! Advancing the systems you’ve got can help to keep your truckers safe and you know that you want them to be more comfortable and less stressed, right?
- Work on your hiring methods. The traditional recruitment methods will work well for truck drivers but freshen up your recruitment methods will help you to bring on talent that you can expect to keep. You want people to expect the best from you, and if you want to retain quality employees you need to go where they are spending their time and make sure that you use the right language to get people on board.
Your truck drivers should feel like they are in the right role with a company that supports them properly. Take the time to make sure that your current retention strategies are positive and your truckers won’t leave you!
