It’s not really a surprise that closing a business is tough. Just think about it; it’s emotional, overwhelming, and filled with decisions you’d rather not make. On top of that, figuring out what to do with all your equipment can feel like a logistical nightmare.
The easy route is to chuck it all into a skip or donate it without much thought. It’s what a lot of people do when they’re moving out of their house or having to clear a dead loved one’s things from their home, so why not do it with your business?
Well, if you’ve done anything and everything you could to try to ensure that your business was environmentally friendly, why end that now? Why not go out with a bang, that final eco-friendly gesture? Seriously, instead of letting everything go to waste, why not focus on giving your equipment a second life and stay eco-friendly?
Sell or Donate the Good Stuff
Not everything needs to be binned. Plenty of equipment, furniture, or tools could still be useful to someone else. Just think of it like rehoming your business’s belongings. Other small businesses, start-ups, or even local charities might be crying out for what you’ve got. Besides, the obvious thing to do is to just sell, right? After all, selling is a win-win. You recoup a bit of cash while someone else gets a good deal.
Plus, online marketplaces are packed with buyers hunting for affordable second-hand gear, and yeah, this even includes industrial machinery (that is worth tens of thousands). But yeah, if you’re in a hurry to get everything out of the way ASAP, then sure, selling can be a hassle; that’s totally understandable.
But in that case, rather than throwing everything out to a dumpster, just donate what you can instead. Besides, there are charities, community projects, and even schools out there that could make great use of your items. Just make sure what you’re offering is still in decent shape; no one needs another broken printer.
Get Creative with Repurposing
Not everything has to stay in its original form. Basically, repurposing is where creativity meets sustainability. So, you could probably take a few pieces of furniture home (or even staff), so those could be repurposed into something else. But of course, you could even put it on FB Marketplace, as there might be someone out there who can repurpose it instead.
Recycle What Can’t Be Saved
Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, an item is just beyond saving. But that doesn’t mean it has to end up in landfill. A lot of people have this idea that something that’s broken and unusable should be dumped in the trash, but no, absolutely not! Actually, metals, plastics, and electronics can often be stripped down and processed into something new.
Actually, a scrap yard is a great place for machinery or large items that can’t be reused, which is idealfor salvaging materials. But overall, it’s definitely worth just taking a shot to look into your local recycling centers; they’re pretty flexible.
Don’t Overwhelm the Donation Centers
While donations are wonderful, it’s easy to offload anything and everything onto charities and assume they’ll sort it out. But here’s the reality: charities often get inundated with items they can’t use, which ends up creating waste elsewhere- they throw it out. This is why you shouldn’t try dumping everything onto them: you’re defeating the purpose of being eco-friendly.
