Strategies for Preventing a High Staff Turnover Rate
High staff turnover poses significant challenges for businesses. It’s expensive and time-consuming to frequently replace employees, leading to decreased productivity and morale. It can also signal underlying issues within the business too. Since your staff are the many hands that make light work, and are what keeps your company running each day, getting hold of the right people and retaining them is crucial. If you’ve found that lots of staff members are leaving after a short space of time, here are some areas you could consider in Preventing a High Staff Turnover rate.
Select Candidates Carefully
To keep staff turnover low, start by hiring the right people. Look for candidates with the necessary skills and experience for the job you’re offering. If they lack specific skills, consider their transferable skills or other qualities that make them worth training. Perhaps they have done a lot of voluntary work in the field you’re in, or something else which shows they genuinely want the position and would work hard for you if given it. Your job ad should be carefully written so that it describes the role accurately and doesn’t dress it up. This will prevent people from taking the job and leaving because it’s not what they thought or doesn’t live up to expectations. When you’re interviewing, be sure to ask lots of questions to really get to know the candidate and conduct further interviews if you need to. Check their references to be sure about things like their background, including any criminal history. Get the selection process right and get the right team members on board in the first place and you’re likely to experience less staff turnover.
Adjust Salary and Employee Benefits
The pay and perks you gave employees at first might have seemed fair. But if their workload or effort has gone up, giving them a raise or agreeing to one could be an option. Employee benefits can include medical dental, retirement and disability plans, as well as added bonuses like a company car. With these kinds of benefits along with a fair wage, employees are likely to feel secure in their job meaning they’re less likely to stray and find somewhere else to work. Even just treating your team to a free lunch or dinner once in a while can mean a lot to them. It’s a chance for everyone to bond and spend time together. If you haven’t reviewed what you’re offering to employees lately, it’s worth taking another look. You could even find out what kinds of packages your competitors offer so you can make sure that you’re keeping up with them. Another thing you can offer your employees is training and qualifications so they’re constantly levelling up. Companies like Enterprise LMS offer this, it can make your staff more efficient and prevent them feeling stagnant at work.
Watch for Bullying and Harassment
A primary cause for people leaving their jobs is dissatisfaction with their coworkers. Workplace bullying and harassment can be a huge problem, and if you have lots of new staff members quitting quite early on then this could well be the cause. This kind of negativity hurts your company. When staff members force others out, it costs time and money, so it needs to be dealt with. Have a clear no-bullying rule and encourage reporting of any problems. Offering anonymous reporting can help people speak up without fear. Bullying and harassment claims should be taken very seriously, if not your company could well end up with a lawsuit on it’s hands. HR usually deals with these issues, if you don’t want to deal with HR on site then you could always outsource to a specialist company.
