It would be very cynical and tired to say family life and business life are the same, or that they should be approached with the same perspective. You’re not trying to “maximize a return for shareholders” in your family, nor do you need to “optimize and cost cut” to make happy childhood memories.
That said – could these concepts have something to say at least in part? After all, you are the “shareholders” of your family, and a “maximized return” could mean happiness, connection, love, and shared memories. “Optimizing” might refer to increasing the amount of time you spend with your loved ones, and “cost-cutting” is a necessary process most families consider, because running a family is expensive, and so avoiding waste in your budget is usually a smart idea.
It turns out that yes, perhaps some of those management skills can, in some ways, apply to running a household. Let’s consider where that might be the case when we answer the question, So Should Families & Businesses Be Run Differently?
Team-Building Exercises
As a manager, you want your team to feel like they’re on good terms with one another, that they’re welcome to collaborate, and to support each other when times are tough. Team building exercises can be part of that, be that adventure days, award shows each year, and more. But what about your family? Well, scheduling regular days where you head out and explore the world around, be that days out to the local park, aquarium, or Lazerport Fun Center lazerportfuncenter.com can all be valuable goals to meet. This way, your family aren’t a set of strangers living in the same house, but an integrated unit of people who feel a real friendship and alliance to one another.
Internal HR Processes
Now, you’re unlikely to hire outsourced HR services to help you conduct your family life. But some of the standards can be applied – impartiality when there’s a disagreement, handling sensitive issues confidentially, always having an open door from employee to employer (or parent to child), and applying appropriate correct discipline where it’s needed. When you integrate internal HR processes, you implement a more cogent and reasoned means of structuring disagreements and difficulties, and yes, some of the corporate standard could work well here. Just be sure to humanize your approach, and remember, children aren’t contracted laborers, and no matter how much they draw on your walls, you can’t fire them.
Company & Family Values
Every company worth its salt, and every family that hopes to function needs values to guide them. That doesn’t mean you have to come up with brand new answers to longstanding ethical questions, you only have to consider what’s important to you, and the direction that will cultivate the best investment in your assets (in this case, your children serve as irreplaceable, cherished and always improving assets). So for example, teaching children about the importance of sharing, of being kind, of hard work, and of discipline is essential, and that can also help disagreements between both sides of the “enterprise,” in this case the parents. Implement family values will help in untold numbers of ways.
With this advice, you’re sure to see that families and businesses should be run differently, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take some advice from either category!
