What am I doing in life to earn the respect of those that follow me? 

An important question for any leader.

You see, sometimes in life we are placed into leadership by position, sometimes by birth, and sometimes by circumstance. However it is we got there though, we must remember one very important truth. As Sir William Wallace’s character once said in the movie Braveheart (1995), “Men (people) don’t follow titles, they follow courage.” 


So what’s this mean?  

In some way, we are all leaders. Maybe not the kind that command the thousands on the battlefield, or millions through government, or the masses through the board room, but we are all leaders in our homes, community, and hearts. And that’s where the real Leadership happens everyday.

The small, repeated, and consistent actions that we take each are the ones that fine tune our homes and set a clear standard and vision of who we are, what we believe, and where we are going. If we lead each day with integrity, courage, and love, then we will have passionate followers ready to stand by our side in any battle.

On the contrary though, if we abuse our liberties, live hypocritically, or bully people through the power of our position, then we will one day die alone and have an empty funeral.  Remember, people might follow those types of leaders out of fear or necessity, but inside, they do not command their respect, trust, or love. And one day, as soon as the opportunity arises, they will leave them. And why shouldn’t they? They have not earned their respect.

So I encourage you Leaders, take time to consider how you are currently leading your people. Whether you are a business owner, team leader, government official, spouse, or parent, ask yourself, “What am I doing in life to earn the respect of those that follow me?”

If you can’t come up with a good answer(s), go back to the basics in your own life. Ask yourself:

  • What is our purpose/calling?
  • What is the vision that we need to work together to achieve?
  • How am I personally contributing to, and living out that vision/calling?
  • How have I hurt my people?
  • What do I need to do to make this right?


Then, simply:

  1. Apologize Sincerely.
  2. Ask for Forgiveness.
  3. Make right what needs to be made right within your power.
  4. Move Forward Together & Achieve that Vision!


And always remember, the past is the past, learn from it, but don’t dwell on it. No matter how good or how bad of a Leader you’ve been to date, it can all change today. So make it change for the better!
