You might think your stockroom is well organized, laid out, and makes perfect sense to use. But if you never step foot in there, nor actually have to work according to the system you’ve set up, you wouldn’t know otherwise.
Your employees, on the other hand, do. They know exactly how easy it is to find something amongst the shelves, to rotate stock, and to keep aisles clear of trip hazards.
And they might not find it easy at all.
That’s what might be causing a delay in your business. That’s what might be causing a profit loss in the amount of stock you have to throw away. The set up of your stock room is the culprit, and it’s time to listen to your employees about the frustrations they have to deal with.
Indeed, your stockroom might not be organized at all. And the issues below could very well be to blame.
The Amount of Different Labels You Use
You might think that a minute level of detail is the best way to stay organized, each of which is color or number coded in a different way. This means employees know exactly what they’re looking at by just seeing the color or sequence, right?
In reality, this just complicates matters. After all, if every item in your stockroom practically has its own unique code, it’s going to be very hard to both place the item, trace it when needed, or recall the right color or number when going through your inventory.
How Difficult it is to Manoeuvre Anything
If you stock items that are anything less than box shaped, your employees will regularly have to move unwieldy and heavy products around the stock area. And if you have a large warehouse that requires employees to go back and forth, this is likely to be the least favorite part of their job.
You need to provide better equipment for the task. And thankfully, it doesn’t have to be all that expensive to do so. You could look into roll cage hire for items that are long, flexible, and otherwise hard to carry by just one person alone.
If these kinds of packages can be loaded into an open cage that can be rolled around with just two hands, you’ll cut the time required for the task in half, at the least.
Keeping Waste Under Control
Stockrooms don’t have to be messy places. It might seem like there’s no way around this, but this is actually the most surefire sign that your current storage system isn’t working.
Because you’re producing far more waste than your stock room should be responsible for. So much in fact that your staff can’t keep up.
That’s why you need an easy-access waste collection can at the end of each aisle, which can be emptied all at once later on.
Your employees might hate your stockroom. Check in with these frustrations and see what you can change.
