IT procurement mistakes aren’t always obvious when you make them. Over time, the problems will show up day to day, and they’ll impact how efficient you are, how easily staff can work, and it will be the repairs and fixes you have to make post-installation that impact your bottom line
If you want to avoid some of the mistakes involved when buying IT hardware, we have something you really should avoid.
Assuming Lowest Price is Best
The cheapest options upfront aren’t always the cheapest options over a few years after purchase. In fact, hardware that comes in under budget can often be that price due to corners being cut or standards not being as high as more expensive options. And if your hardware has used lower-grade materials or components, it’ll have shorter warranty periods and potentially fail faster, meaning you’re looking at repairs, extra maintenance, and earlier replacement costs.
But on top of this, you’re looking at the cost of failure too. For networks and servers, you’re risking excessive downtime, data risks, and operational disruption at a minimum. Suddenly, that lower purchase price isn’t sounding so enticing, is it?
Ignoring the Total Cost of Ownership
Reiterating the above point, the total cost of ownership should always be factored into any IT purchases. Do not just look at the price and make your decision. You want to know the real cost of the hardware. This typically includes maintenance, energy consumption, software licensing tied to specific units, and eventual replacement.
A piece of equipment that costs less to buy might cost more to run, service, and eventually replace, costing you significantly more than one with a higher upfront cost. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but choosing based on purchase price alone won’t always work out as cost-effective as you might think it will.
Choosing the Wrong Supplier
The reality is you need to be working with the best wholesale supplier for computer & server parts to avoid overpaying for your tech and outsourcing the wrong equipment. Sure, reliability might be more convenient, but it’s not always suitable for business usage, nor will it give you the best price.
Choosing the wrong supplier means you’re going to be risking quality, you’re not going to be able to rely on them to have the ability when you need it, and this will impact how operational you are on an ongoing basis. When you’re sourcing your hardware, you need a supplier who can show you their reliability with real data to back it up, who can match your order volume and frequencies, and offer you more flexibility to minimize disruptions.
Overlooking Refurbished Hardware
Now, not all hardware can and should be refurbished, nor will it all be an appropriate choice for you, but that doesn’t mean you need to discount it immediately. Sure, in some circumstances it can be a risk. But it is a legitimate and cost-effective option for some purchases.
Refurbished servers and networking equipment from reliable and reputable sources that are tested, certified, and come with warranties can often be comparable with new units but cost less.
Choosing refurbished items for equipment that isn’t operationally critical or where you’re buying to extend capacity rather than to replace core functionality can cut costs considerably across the board.
