If you are due to welcome a new employee on board, then you will know what a positive and exciting experience this can be for both you and your team. With that said, you do need to make sure that you don’t make the mistakes that so many other people make by simply not taking the time to make sure that they are set up for success from the get-go.
Create a Welcome
Every team member is unique, and therefore, the onboarding process should show this as well. If you want to help your team, then you need to make sure that you start by taking the time to personalise the welcome process as a whole. Sending a personalized welcome email to them before their first day is a good thing to do here, as this allows you to share some essential information and also allows you to express how excited you are about them coming to the team. Simple gestures like this can go a long way, and they can also help you to create a more positive tone, which will help them to feel valued from the get-go.
Have a Clear Plan
Another thing you need to do is try to create a clear plan. As with everything in life, having a comprehensive plan is a good way for you to help you to bring them on board properly. It may be that you try to outline their schedule, any training they will have to undergo, and even the meetings they will have to attend. Creating an employee handbook will help them a lot as well, as this allows them to not only understand their role, but also what’s going to be expected of them moving forward. If you want to build something for them, then using an employee handbook builder can be a good idea here.
Have a Buddy System
Another good thing to do would be for you to use a buddy system. Assigning a buddy or a mentor to your new employee can help them to become a go-to person for anyone who needs advice or anyone who might need a bit more general support. Connections like this are a great way for you to ensure that you are giving someone a true sense of belongings and it also allows you to make sure that they are being supported through every part of their journey.
Put their Wellbeing First
Another good thing to do would be for you to try to put their well-being first. You need to understand that starting a new role, regardless of how competent and experienced you might be, is daunting. During the onboarding process, you need to take the time to show how committed you are and how good your wellness programmes are. If you can do this, then you can take steps to make your team feel more at ease, and you can also make sure that you’re not making the same mistakes that so many other people do when onboarding new members.
