Ironically, the very waste your business produces after making a profit is the one thing that could be dragging those margins back down again.
The worthless offcuts that just get thrown into the trash – those are the very items that could be damaging your revenue year after year. And it’s about time you did something about that.
What is your waste really costing your business? Here’s how it could be affecting your bottom line in the long run.
Spending Too Much on Waste Collection
How often are you getting your business waste taken away? Most businesses have this scheduled for once or twice a week, but some require their waste to be removed once a day.
And depending on the business you’re running, there may be no way around this. However, if you work with multiple waste vendors to remove different types of waste, you could be wasting your money.
You need to double check if these waste types need to be removed separately, in the first place, but you should also check to see if one vendor can remove more than one type at a time.
Waste Management Can Waste Valuable Space
When you invest into waste management, it might feel like you’re doing everything you can to both keep your business clean AND work in a sustainable and green way. However, you could very easily overinvest here.
After all, you want your garbage dumpsters to have plenty of space for waste materials, so you can opt for a once-a-week collection schedule. This keeps costs down in terms of frequency, but you could easily waste a lot of space where other valuable equipment could go.
Indeed, if you were to invest in an industrial plastic baler instead, you could crush and pack down plastic waste before putting it into the disposal. And once you’ve done that, you’ll have twice the amount of room despite the same amount of garbage inside.
This way you can get rid of extraneous overflow, and start using that space for the better.
Understand What Waste You’re Creating
Finally, although this is the first thing to do when you’re worried about waste costs, you need to understand what waste your business creates. You need to know what materials are being thrown away, as well as how often.
Getting a better understanding of this will make it far easier to both arrange collections for your waste, as well as place the right disposal equipment.
For example, if you’re throwing away used coffee filters or tea bags (as your inventory list shows you’re getting through quite a few boxes), it could be worth investing in a small organic waste container for these items in particular.
If you have a separate can for these food products, away from recycling such as paper coffee cups, you ensure these materials can be reused once they reach the recycling center.
Waste can be a hefty cost on your business. Don’t let it spiral out of your control.
