If you run a woodworking business, you’re probably wondering what makes it successful. Why is it that some companies seem to blow up and win a lot of customers while others don’t? That’s the topic of this post. We look at what enables a woodworking business to thrive. It’s more than just having the right skills and tools, although these do help.
Master craftsmanship
The first place to start is with craftsmanship. If your business can excel in the way that it works, then you’ll automatically win customers. They’ll see the higher quality of your results compared to the competition and want to use you more.
Developing craftsmanship takes a long time, which is why most people who set up woodworking businesses begin as apprentices first. After that, they then move on to offering their services to customers themselves.
Find a profitable niche
The next step is to look for a profitable niche. This is an area of the market where you can market yourself differently from everyone else. If you can do something unique that others can’t in your region, then you’ll automatically start winning customers. People will want to use your services because you specialise in the problems that they want to solve.
For example, if you’re the only service in your city that can make benches and tables from natural wood, then you automatically become more valuable. People want services that deliver on their pain points and can deal with issues that they can’t, that other firms can’t deal with otherwise.
Create an efficient work setup

By the same token, you also want to ensure you have an efficient workshop set up. That means that you’ve thought about your operations in detail. For example, owning portable workbenches is handy. These can really make a difference.
So you want to think about the reliability of suppliers to your workshop. Are you working with vendors that can provide you with the wood, tools, and materials you need to deliver for customers? If these sources are unreliable, it can lead to delays and longer lead times and also mean that your staff are sometimes idle, which is costly.
Whether you use a home, garage, or a dedicated facility is up to you. However, having a proper shop with all the materials in the right place can boost your productivity and ensure that you can get everything done in a reasonable time frame.
Smart pricing
Successful woodworking businesses also use smart pricing. They use software to calculate costs accurately, like materials, time, and overhead, so that they can charge their customers the right fees. Because woodworking is often so bespoke, it’s often difficult to know what pricing should be. That’s where proper tools and expense tracking comes in handy.
Add strong branding

Finally, strong branding can help. If you have an online presence and people know about you and what you do, then you’re more likely to gain business. Most other small woodworking shops won’t be advertising what they’re doing online. So, this immediately puts you at an advantage.
