While it is possible to run a completely online business from home, complete with employees and an online store, there are still plenty of industries that require commercial property and physical workspaces.
As a business owner, it’s your responsibility to make sure that your business premises are safe and fit for purpose. Here are a few tips to help you look after your commercial property.
Structural Stability and Repairs
If you rent your property, the maintenance is actually the responsibility of the property owner, or the landlord. Your main responsibility is to not misuse the property and, if issues crop up, to tell the landlord right away.
But if you own the property, you will need to regularly maintain it to make sure that it’s safe and stable. It’s cheaper to fix some minor issues yourself, but for bigger problems like damp proofing, electrical issues, plumbing problems, and structural repairs, hire a professional. A roofing contractor will be able to work more quickly and safely than you ever will.
As well as regular maintenance and sorting out problems as and when they appear, you also need to be proactive when there are storms or other extreme weather conditions, as these can cause more damage.
A Design Fit for Purpose
There are lots of different types of commercial property, and it’s up to you to make sure the layout and design of your building suits the type of business you run.
For example, if you run a restaurant, you’re going to need a different layout, as well as different equipment than someone who runs an automotive garage. The same applies to retail stores, office spaces, and anything else you can think of.
Think about what you need from the property as well as how to provide it. Some properties are already designed for your needs, but if you find a place that’s in a great location but otherwise unsuitable, it might be worth a refurb.
Comfort and Ambience
Whether you run a customer-facing business or not, it’s important to consider the comfort of your building. Good maintenance plays a part in this, as a working HVAC system will go a long way towards maintaining a comfortable temperature.
If you invite customers and clients into the building, background music and a welcoming layout is a good start. But even if you only expect employees to spend the day in the office, try to make it comfortable and pleasant. This will improve morale and even make people work more productively.
Making Your Building Secure
Finally, you need to ensure that your building and everything in it is safe. Some businesses are prime targets for theft, especially if you have expensive equipment or products on-site.
Use locks and security cameras to make entryways more secure and deter potential criminals. You should also invest in cybersecurity, as many hackers target businesses to try to access private customer or employee data or even to steal or hold valuable information for ransom.
This way, you protect your business, as well as your employees and customers.
