So you’ve found yourself with a chunk of farmland, but have absolutely no idea how to drive a tractor? Maybe you’ve just inherited a patch of grass from a random relative you haven’t seen in years, or perhaps you noticed a plot at a ridiculously good price and bought it on a total whim because you fancied owning a slice of the countryside? That’s fine, this plot of land can still make you a fantastic chunk of cash! You really don’t need to know your way around a combine harvester either, city people and suburbanites are always looking for wide open spaces to escape their tiny gardens and your farmland could be the answer. Here are plenty of very creative ways to turn that empty paddock into a solid income stream.

Secure dog fields

A secure dog walking field is basically a modern goldmine, owners will happily pay good money just to stand in the freezing cold while their dog runs around without any risk of it escaping onto a busy road. There aren’t too many of these around so it’s a good earner if you have a plot of land to use. Add a wooden picnic bench and maybe a muddy puddle to splash in and you’ve got a proper business that basically runs itself. You can offer sessions where multiple dogs can join or charge more for exclusive access. You would have to make extra sure that the site is secure with good, high fencing that can’t be easily jumped over or dug under.

Seasonal events

Pumpkin patches are a great, easy way to earn money in the autumn. You don’t even need to grow the pumpkins yourself, believe it or not most pumpkin farms buy them in and place them in their fields. Add some hay bales and decor with plenty of places to take pictures, add some wheelbarrows and you’re good to go. You could invite food and drink vendor trucks to sell at the event too and charge them to do so meaning even more cash, use Modern Farmer software to help track everything and keep the finances running smoothly. Think about setting up a massive sunflower maze in the middle of summer or a rustic Christmas market in the winter months. It doesn’t take much effort to string up some cheap fairy lights and invite a local coffee van to park in the corner of the field to keep the parents happy while the kids run wild.

Camping/ glamping

If your patch of grass has a nice view or even just a few nice trees you’re already sitting on a fantastic opportunity. People are absolutely desperate to sleep outside as long as they don’t actually have to rough it too much in the wild. You can set up a few basic canvas bell tents or build a couple of fancy wooden pods and charge a premium for the rustic experience of sleeping in a field. Even just offering basic flat grass pitches for regular camping brings in steady cash during the summer. Just make sure you sort out a decent outdoor toilet setup and maybe a working shower (otherwise the bad reviews will roll in fast!)
