Having a career that you love is exciting. Unfortunately, just because you are working in your dream job does not mean you will automatically advance your career from that point on. Instead, when you are lucky enough to have a job that you enjoy, you should take proactive steps to ensure you can continue to grow in the position and move forward in the company. Obtain the Necessary Training

Ensuring you have the necessary training to effectively operate in both your current position as well as any that you are considering applying for is essential. This effort on your part shows recruiters, hiring managers, and the human resources department that you are committed to doing what needs to be done so you can perform the job effectively and efficiently. Take proactive steps to obtain the proper safety training, for example, and show everyone that you are dedicated to being the best team member and employee.

Seek Higher Education

Oftentimes, one of the best ways to move your career forward is to seek further education. If you already have a degree, consider obtaining another one in a related field or one that will add value to your resume and the company. An MBA is considered a valuable asset for many businesses when they are looking to fill positions. Your drive to complete an advanced degree also shows potential leadership characteristics in addition to a commitment to furthering yourself. These are both considered desirable assets for many companies.

Go to the Office

If your company operates in a hybrid model where you can work from home on predetermined days and go into the office on others, or going into the office at all is completely optional on your part, you should consider making an appearance. There are multiple reasons for this suggestion, but one of the most important is that you can have valuable face time with your boss. Out of sight and out of mind is a real problem for remote workers. When it comes time for reviews, promotions, and project assignments, anyone who is not present may be passed over. While this may not be intentional or punitive, it does happen. Go into the office and make yourself known. Volunteer for projects and show your company that you are committed to their future, and yours.

Show Your Value

Sometimes, at work, you have to be your own cheerleader. You need to be a salesperson, and you are the product. One of the best ways to move the needle on your career is to show your boss what you bring to the table. This is especially important if your boss is hands-off, frequently out of the office, or if you face stiff competition for a promotion.

Start by sitting down and documenting every single thing you have done to add value to the company. This may include hard statistics that show an increase in production or money saved through innovative strategies. Perhaps you were able to land a huge client. Of course, your boss noticed that, but sometimes, they need a reminder. As you write down all the things you have done to add value to your company, remember to add facts, numbers, dates, outcomes, savings, and anything else to drive the point home.

Take Care of Yourself

Showing up for work as anything other than your best self is not helpful for your career trajectory. Basically, if you are not focused on the basics of self-care, you might arrive at work groggy or out of sorts and lose sight of what is important to complete your job with excellence and care. Lack of sleep or eating well might lead to a crabby attitude that is not conducive to collaborative work. In addition, your co-workers will notice. Your boss will notice, too. Presenting yourself as disheveled and performing below expectations does not bode well for future promotions. Instead of sabotaging yourself, prioritize self-care by going to bed on time, paying attention to what you eat, and giving yourself time to recharge.
