Hiring the right person for a role can feel a little bit like online dating. Everyone looks fantastic on paper, but the real question is whether they are actually the right fit once conversations begin.A strong candidate is not always the one with the fanciest resume or the longest list of achievements either. Sometimes the best employees are the ones who bring the right attitude and communication style. If you’ve got people who on paper don’t have much experience, but they have a lot of enthusiasm and a willingness to grow, you’re on to a winner. Here are four important things businesses should look for when hiring a good candidate.

A willingness to learn.

Skills can be taught, but a positive attitude towards learning is much harder to develop. Great candidates are often curious and adaptable. They’re not afraid to ask questions or improve their skills over time. Many businesses now use talent assessment tests during recruitment to better understand how candidates think, solve problems and approach challenges. While experience matters, learning ability is often what helps employees to grow into long-term success stories. A candidate who is excited to improve can become a valuable part of the business for years to come.

Strong communication skills.

Good communication makes every workplace smoother. Employees need to work well with teammates, speak clearly with customers, and understand instructions without confusion. This doesn’t mean that candidates need to sound like professional, motivational speakers. Simple, respectful, and confident communication is usually way more important than fancy business language. During interviews, pay attention to how candidates explain their experiences and respond to questions. Strong communicators are often better at handling teamwork, solving problems, and building positive relationships in the workplace. Plus, they are usually easier to work with on a busy Monday.

Reliability and professionalism.

Every business values employees who show up on time, follow through on tasks, and stay dependable under pressure. Reliability isn’t always exciting on paper, but it’s one of the most important qualities in any workplace. Candidates who arrive prepared for interviews and respond professionally to emails often demonstrate strong workplace habits. Early professionalism also includes how candidates treat others through that hiring process. Respectful behaviour toward reception staff, recruiters and interviewers says a lot about how they may behave as employees.

A good cultural fit.

Even highly skilled candidates may struggle if they don’t fit the company culture. Every workplace has its own personality and style of working, and some businesses thrive in fast-paced environments, while others focus more on collaboration and flexibility. Finding candidates who will naturally align with the company culture can improve teamwork and employee satisfaction.

Hiring is so much more than qualifications. Your business is going to succeed when you build up teams filled with reliable, motivated and positive people. Looking beyond resumes and focusing on personality can help your company find candidates who truly stand out. Don’t be afraid to look at the growth potential of the people that you hire.
