If you run a construction company or are at all involved in this sphere, laying concrete is an important part of your work – even if you’re not the one physically laying it yourself.
No matter whether you’re working on industrial or consumer projects, concrete is essential for virtually all major building work, and when it comes to getting a smooth, perfect finish, there’s more than meets the eye.
A big part of the finish comes from the equipment you use, and there are a plethora of tools you should be familiar with if you want to do a good job. To help get you started, this short article will cover five of the most important tools for laying concrete perfectly, ensuring you get the ideal result every time.
1. Concrete Mixer
Naturally, a concrete mixer comes top of the list. This is easily the most essential piece of equipment you need when laying concrete, as without it, you won’t be able to get the consistency you need for optimal strength.
It ensures the mixture of cement, water, and aggregates is properly blended, and while it’s sometimes possible to blend by hand, nothing beats the speed at which a concrete mixer can get the job done.
Speed is also key, not just for your own sake, but for the finish; if you don’t work fast enough, the mixture can easily weaken and be ruined.
2. Concrete Screed
A concrete screed works by leveling the concrete once it’s poured, efficiently removing the excess and making sure everything’s even.
Pouring is often the most critical part to get right, and a screed ensures you’re properly forming the concrete into whatever shape and size you need without imperfections.
3. Pugmill
If you need a continuous pour, a pugmill is your best friend.
They’re used for a variety of processes, from drying waste sludges to smaller applications, such as in pottery studios. When it comes to a pugmill for concrete, the benefit here is being able to mix all necessary materials rapidly into the ideal blend, which is great for roller-compacted concrete and cement-treated materials.
4. Bull Float
A bull float is another great tool for smoothing and flattening. It’s used immediately following the application of a concrete screed, and works to compress the aggregates and provide a better finish.
It’s also a great timesaver, as you won’t need to spend much time with a trowel at the end.
5. Finishing Trowel
A finishing trowel is something anyone working with concrete needs to do their work well. This simple tool allows you to finalize the pour, creating a perfectly smooth surface and ironing out any imperfections before the mixture fully cures.
There are many different ways you can use one, and it’s often said that the hallmark of a professional is how versatile they are with a trowel.
Wrapping Up
You should now have a better idea of the sorts of tools you need to familiarize yourself with if you’re going to be working with concrete. There are other tools to consider, but understanding how to use the above will get you a big part of the way there.
