Growing an internal area of expertise within your company will create a foundation that will allow your company to build success for years to come.
Rather than hiring outside consultants/vendors to perform each specialized function, you are developing a team of experts who are trained specifically to meet your needs and meet your quality requirements.
The issue is however, not as black and white as this. Training in-house specialists takes time, money, and resources. Ultimately the right question is simply does training in-house make sense in terms of how you want your business to expand?
The Value Of Internal Expertise
There are two advantages to developing expertise in-house. First, internal expert skill development will always create consistency as the employee has a greater understanding of how processes operate from both the technical and organizational standpoint. Second, internal experts have a “stake” or ownership in their process, which is difficult to achieve for companies that hire third party vendors.
Because internal experts typically develop solutions based on years of working with many different aspects of a problem, they will usually identify and implement innovations that outside companies may be unable to.
The Investment Perspective
Investing in training is an investment in your organization; it is a strategic one. Yes, the initial outlay may appear costly. However, when you compare the long-term benefits of less reliance on outside vendors and shorter response time to issues at hand, these costs become significantly diminished.
However, this does not mean that every area of a business requires its own internal resources. There are many regulated areas and/or very expensive equipment required as part of certain industries. A hybrid model would be a viable option.
In other words, depending upon the cost, hiring a bio-hazard cleanup company could be cheaper than buying and training staff with the appropriate equipment. And, while it does not diminish the argument for in-house training. It does support it, by illustrating that intelligent organizations are prudent and thoughtful regarding which functions will receive their focus.
Culture And Retention Benefits
Training is something people can do to develop their skills and abilities. When employees see that they have opportunities for growth it sends a powerful signal that an organization believes in employee development. The employees will be more loyal to the company and more productive.
When knowledge sharing becomes a regular part of what everyone does, there are some significant changes that occur culturally within an organization. Collaboration increases among team members; instead of isolated departments working independently from one another, you begin to see a collaborative and supportive network of workers.
Flexibility And Competitive Edge
Markets evolve at a rapid pace. An internal specialist provides an organization the opportunity to be adaptable as well as have control over their own timeline as opposed to relying on a third party’s timeline.
Organizations can take advantage of the idea-testing and refining strategy process within weeks or even days, rather than months; they can also address problems immediately rather than waiting for other organizations to resolve them.
Having this flexibility in place, ultimately creates a competitive advantage. Organizations that rely on third-party coordination may be moving forward, but your organization has already moved forward with execution. This speed and knowledge becomes difficult for another organization to replicate.
Conclusion
Training inhouse specialists is not about replacing every external service. It is about choosing where your business gains the most value from internal expertise. When done thoughtfully, it builds knowledge, strengthens culture, and creates a more agile organization.
The smartest approach is balanced. Invest in your people where it counts, stay open to outside support where it makes sense, and your focus on long term growth.
