Episode / Guest Frequently Asked Questions… and Answers!

Q1: What is the "Mechanism of Chronic Disease" according to Dr. Schmidt?

A1: It is a biological cycle, often involving lactic acidosis and mitochondrial dysfunction, that prevents cells from producing energy properly, leading to systemic illness.

Q2: Why does Dr. Schmidt focus on functional nutrition?

A2: Because functional nutrition addresses the underlying chemical and biological deficiencies that cause symptoms, rather than just masking the symptoms with drugs.

Q3: What is the biggest mistake people make with their diet?

A3: Following outdated “standard of care” advice that prioritizes processed carbohydrates and seed oils over nutrient-dense, whole-food fats and proteins.

Most of us have been trained to treat health like a game of Whac-A-Mole: one symptom pops up, we hit it with a pill, and then wait for the next one. Dr. Darren Schmidt is here to pull back the curtain on why this approach is keeping us sick.

The Discovery of the “Mechanism”

Dr. Schmidt details his journey into functional medicine and the specific biological mechanism that drives almost every chronic condition—from heart disease to metabolic issues.

Why “Standard of Care” Isn’t Enough

We explore the gap between pharmaceutical-based medicine and actual healing. Dr. Schmidt explains how he uses lactic acidosis research and historical medical data to find solutions that the modern system often overlooks.

This episode is a masterclass in biological logic. Dr. Schmidt breaks down complex health topics into actionable steps, emphasizing that the body wants to heal if we simply give it the right environment and nutrients.

The Root Cause of Chronic Disease: Dr. Darren Schmidt on Functional Healing

David Pasqualone: Hello friends. Welcome to this week’s episode of The Remarkable People Podcast. Today we have with us Darren Schmidt. Darren, thanks for being here today, brother.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: You’re welcome. Thank you for having me.

David Pasqualone: Oh, it’s an honor. So ladies and gentlemen, whether this is your first episode or you’ve been serial listening all nine years with us, we’re so thankful you’re here today.

Darren is going to bring you content. We’re going to talk about his life, we’re going to talk about what he’s passionate about, but most importantly, how does that affect you? So you can live even better, healthier, and grow? Darren. We are going to go through your life chronologically and talk in depth about what you do, why, how.

But before we do, if there’s one thing you guarantee our listeners that by the end of this episode, they will be able to not only learn, but apply to their life, a takeaway and grow. [00:01:00] What is that?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: It’s a physical blood test measurement that was released January, 2025. It’s still pretty new on the market.

Not many doctors know about it. It measures and guides and tracks your health improvement journey. So we can talk about that later. But regarding the physical body, biochemistry and normal function of the body, when you get that going really well, then you feel better and all kinds of emotional stuff gets better, et cetera, et cetera.

So that’s what we’ll get into.

David Pasqualone: All right. So you just woke up one day and this was super passionate, or there was a life that led up to this, correct?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah. There was a life that led up to this.

David Pasqualone: Absolutely. Ladies and gentlemen, what we’re going to do is we are going to go through Darren’s life. We’re going to see what brought him to the place where he’s at today, and how he uses these blood tests to help his patients and how whether you are in America or whether you’re overseas, you can apply the same type of [00:02:00] knowledge and testing and hopefully have even a better existence.

All right, Darren, so let’s do this. Where were you born? What was your upbringing like? Good, bad, ugly. Pretty ugly. Everything that happens to us makes us the people we are today. So where did your life begin?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: I was born in Toledo, Ohio. My family is from Swanton, Ohio, which is just a half hour west of Toledo. And we swanton iss a farm town. We had a farm. My great-grandfather started a farm in 1937. His three brothers took over, and then from there were six cousins that took over. So we’re talking about. Is my father that kind of read, wrote was in charge of the [00:05:00] executive side and hiring and firing and government relations and stuff like that.

Other cousins did more planting and harvesting, and we had 14 and a half acres of greenhouses. And we had no animals, but it was all plants. So I started working on the farm when I was nine. It wasn’t recorded by the government until I was like, what, 11 or 12? And I started working at 50 cents an hour.

I spent 17 summers of my life working on the farm. And so o one interesting story was when I was young, before I was working there, I must’ve been six or so, and I would be with my dad all day just walking around. And I remember sitting in the office and his brother came in and he said that he had, he goes, I just inspected that field of potatoes.

And our potato, Beto larvae on the leaves. And he put, he had a pen and he put a dot on a piece of paper and he said, they’re about this [00:06:00] big. And my dad pushed himself away from the table, the desk. And he swore and he goes, I just sprayed that field last week. And so I could realize, at that age okay, they’re dealing with chemicals, they’re not working.

Mother Nature is winning this fight. And it was at that point I realized I have this holistic way of thinking. And so that, definitely plays into my role in healing later. But on the farm I learned how to work hard and I had this holistic viewpoint and but farming was not in my cards at all.

It’s not, I’m not made for farming. So I went to college, I went to Ohio State and I was pre-med and I wanted to be a doctor of something. In my family, nobody was ever really sick. Some people have an aunt or parent who spends weeks and weeks in the hospital every year. I never had any experiences like that.

So when I was pre-med, there’s that blood or there’s the academic test called the [00:07:00] MCATs, the entrance exam for medical school. And before I took that test, I decided do I really want to be a medical doctor? And I interviewed a dozen students and doctors of medicine. On campus and no, nobody encouraged me to go into medicine.

They mostly complained about the paperwork and I don’t know, just, there just wasn’t a passion or a fire in their eyes about the profession for all 12 of them. So I decided, okay, I’m not going to go into medicine. So I looked at optometry, podiatry, veterinary medicine. Then I spent a couple hours with a chiropractor and he was, very passionate and he said, you can have a problem in your back causing pain down your leg.

And he said, if you’re treating the pain, then you’re lost. You have to treat the cause of the pain, which is in the back. And I was like, okay, that sounds right. That’s a holistic viewpoint. I like that. Plus it was manual labor, so I was used to manual labor working on the farm. So I went to chiropractic school and I hadn’t, in my first semester, I’d never even been [00:08:00] adjusted by a chiropractor.

And here I am in chiropractic school. So during the first couple years of school, I went to two seminars a month for two years outside of the school. And this is in Chicago. The school is national is, that’s what it’s called. National College of Chiropractic. And they’re in Lombardi, Illinois, so western suburb of Chicago.

And we’re talking, this is the mid nineties and there was a ton of great seminars and there were a few on nutrition and one in particular was really cool. I walked outta there thinking to myself, okay, I wanna be a chiropractor who focuses on nutrition. Because I realized at that seminar like this. The reason why we’re so sick again, this is 1996.

The reason why our country is so sick is because of our food supply is so terrible. And you eat bad food, you have bad chemistry, then your body goes haywire, you end up chronically ill, and when you treat it with drugs, you’re totally missing the point. Our body’s made from Mother Nature and we need to use [00:09:00] tools from Mother Nature to heal it.

And the first step is get rid of junk food and eat meat and vegetables. So I graduated in 97. I started nutrition practice in 98, and in 1999 I went to a person’s home. They were teaching a basic nutrition class through an organization called the Wes, a Price Foundation. And Wes, a price is a dentist from Cleveland who traveled the world in the 1930s.

He’s visited 134 tribes and looked at their traditional diets. And he realized, okay, they’re very healthy. They have no cavities, their dental arches are perfect, no arthritis, no heart disease, no cancer. All over the world. If any of those people, of those native tribes went to a city or started eating what he called foods of modern commerce, they started losing their teeth and getting arthritis and getting really sick.

So the foods of mono would be white bread and canned food basically. And in 19, the [00:10:00] 1930s. How bad was the food? Our food now is so much worse than what it was back then. So he was pre, prior to the 1930s, he was the former president of the American Dental Association, so Western Ear price is not a slouch.

At all. And he wrote huge books, textbooks on dentistry and infections in the teeth causing cancer and arthritis. So anyways, this group called the Wes Knee Price Foundation, they still exist. They’re very powerful, lots of members. They would have a variety of people all over the country just teaching out of their home.

So I went to this meeting and this teacher was saying, talking about the benefits of healthy fat. And I was like, wait a minute. You mean there’s a thing called healthy fat? She’s yeah, like the fat that you find in dairy is healthy. And that blew me away ’cause I just was, taught that all fat is bad, which is what you know, which is what we hear.

David Pasqualone: Yeah. And you and I, in the nineties they had I think her name was Susan Powder and she was on [00:11:00] all the infomercials and so many people like her, like these fat diets and they’re like, no fat. No fat. And I remember asking my mom, ’cause my mom was always on some crazy diet, I’m like. How can fat be bad?

I’m like, twine. Yeah. All these chemicals. Yeah. But fats and foods God made. How can that be bad for you? And then years later we found out that you need healthy fat.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Right. Yeah. It’s a cultural shift there. So that was 1999, so I went on a low carb diet and I kept my carbs below 75 grams a day for the next, I don’t know, 16 years.

If I ever cheated, I would still be below 125 grams a day. And so I changed around 2015 because I went on a keto diet. So with that you go high fat, moderate protein, very low carb, and I went into ketosis, which means my body’s burning fat instead of sugar or carb. [00:12:00] And then you come outta ketosis.

So then you eat carbs to come out of it, and that’s called metabolic flexibility. So you go from burning sugar to burning fat back and forth. And when you’re metabolically flexible like that, then you’re healthy. You have metabolic health, and currently it’s about six or 7% of the American population is metabolically healthy.

So we’re talking 93% are not. And so get in and outta ketosis and then you’ll be metabolically healthy. So then in 2018, the carnivore diet came out and I went carnivore, which I love still doing that, meaning that 90% of my calories come from meat. And sometimes it’s accidentally keto because eating only meat or fasting or something like that.

So that’s the carnivore diet that that’s the basis of my diet not everybody. So now, okay. So back to my story. So in 1999 I went to low carb and I started my practice and I bounced around [00:13:00] to a few places and I settled in Ann Arbor in 2000. And I quit taking insurance in 2005, so 26 years ago.

Oh my gosh. Is that right? 20 No, two, yeah. 21 years ago. And I wanted to focus on nutrition. I quit taking new new chiropractic patients 15 years ago, so I only take new nutrition patients. We just talk about diet and supplements. And then I have my testing procedures and I’ve been learning about herbs and binders, detox products, all kinds of different diets and glandulars and all these tools.

There’s an enormous amount of tools to heal the body. And the overarching theme is supplements. They all come in as a supplement. So that’s what I do. I heal people from chronic illness using only diet and supplements. So having said that, I also like to study old nutrition and medical textbooks. So if you can see [00:14:00] behind me these books back here, they look kinda old.

Yeah, that’s because they are, they go back, around, I think my oldest one is like 1906, and then I study up to about 1955 or 58. And back then, like that was the vitamin era. They were discovering vitamins in the twenties and thirties. The first glandulars came out in the market in the twenties or early later in the I’m sorry, earlier in the teens, let’s say 1915 glandulars started coming out.

And so then the whole profession of medicine was about feeding studies and vitamins and minerals. And in these textbooks, they. Would have animals or, and or people have a certain diet and then they would take away foods or vitamins and they would see disease come. Then they would add that food or vitamin back in and they would see the disease go away.

So that’s what it comes down to. And one of the most important vitamins is B one. It was the first vitamin [00:15:00] ever discovered. It was the first vitamin ever made in a factory and put into our food, and that was in 1934. And the fa, the guy that found it, his name is Dr. Otto Warberg. He’s the father of physiology.

He’s the greatest physiologist ever, walk the earth. And see he won the Nobel Prize for that discovery of B one in 1931. So we’ll get into B one later ’cause it’s very much related to MVX plus the blood test. So in my career then. As I have seen tens of thousands of patients, I’ve seen patterns, and I always had the question, there’s gotta be some underlying common denominator that I, is, why are people sick like this?

I just was looking for trying to solve the puzzle. There’s a common denominator. What is it? So there can be a person with, let’s say their fatigue. They have depression and they have fibromyalgia and a [00:16:00] deep ache in their calf muscles. And then another person has a chronic rash on their skin and they’re bloated and they have acid reflux and headaches.

So two different sets of symptoms. They have a common denominator, but yet they have different symptoms. So allopathic treatment of those symptoms is what our current medical model does. And yet you can still treat those symptoms allopath with diet and supplements too. But if you get to the core, the mechanism, and you get to the causes, then you can rid the person of their problem permanently, basically.

So I figured this out, this common denominator in 2016, and here’s why. So I moved into an office in 2006, or I’m sorry, 2000 four. It was moldy and I moved into a house in 2006 and that was moldy. So I’m living and working in a moldy environment now. The molds [00:17:00] affected my body differently. The mold in the office caused heart pain and cardiovascular and circulatory symptoms.

The mold in the house caused constipation. So these are two different, molds, actually multiple molds, but I had two different sets of symptoms from these two locations. Now, I didn’t realize I had mold in these places until later. So regarding the office, I figured this out in 2016, in October of 2016.

But the thing is, earlier that year, in February, January, February, I literally thought I was dying. I went to the urgent care twice that year. I got four EKGs. I had high blood pressure, trouble breathing, left arm numbness, left jawbone, numbness, chest pain, like heart attack symptoms. February 3rd, 2016, I thought I was dying and it’s two o’clock in the morning, I can’t breathe.

Blood pressure’s high and I’m screwing through my phone like up laying on my back, like scrolling through my [00:18:00] phone, do I call an ambulance to come pick me up? Do I drive to the hospital? Which hospital should I go to? And I decided I’m not going to go there because they’re not going to find plaque arteries.

I don’t have plaque any in my arteries. ’cause my diet’s been so good for so long. And I I had already been to urgent care once before that. So I went back to these old books and there’s an article from 1958 that I read and. He, this article was a summary of the previous 20 years regarding a subject called lactic acidosis, which is a mechanism of chronic disease.

And this is the common denominator of chronic illness, and there’s a whole mechanism behind it, like toxic blood hypoxia, cell starvation, cell death. And when you have cell muscular, when the muscle cells die, they start to tighten up and then people get a tightening in their chest. They get shortness of breath.

They can’t [00:19:00] breathe very well. Their heart hurts. It’s ’cause their muscles are dying and they run to the hospital and they’re, thinking they’re having a heart attack and they’re not. And the doctors say, oh, you’re just having an anxiety attack. Go see a psychiatrist. So they get put on drugs to battle the mechanism of lactic acidosis.

Now, currently, this year, the definition of lactic acidosis is way different than what it was in the 1930s. So in the 1930s, they said, if you have a chronic illness, just assume you have lactic acidosis. Now, instead of calling it lactic acidosis as a mechanism of chronic disease, it’s called mitochondrial dysfunction.

And you may have heard of this, even RFK Juniors talking about it. He says, you go to a, he can go into an airport and look at children, and he can see mitochondrial dysfunction, he can see chronic illness. So these are two mechanisms. They occur at the same time. Mitochondrial dysfunction occurs in the mitochondria, and then lactic acid occur dose, I’m sorry, [00:20:00] lactic acidosis occurs outside of the mitochondria, but still inside the cell.

So anyways, this is all figured out 85, 95 years ago, and when I read this article from 1958 about lactic acidosis, I was like, oh my gosh, this is it. I have it. ’cause I went through the symptoms of it and. I was like, this is the common denominator of this is what I’ve been looking for my whole career. As to what, like what’s the basis basic common denominator everybody has with chronic disease and it’s lactic acidosis now.

It’s not a cause, it’s a mechanism of chronic illness. So that was 2016, so I started talking about it and I have supplements from a company called Standard Process. This company has been around since 1929. They have supplements. Designed in the 1930s that are designed to take care of lactic acidosis, and I started taking one of them within two days.

I was on the right track. I felt [00:21:00] better and I took a high dose for six every day. For six weeks, and it kept me going. As in the meantime, I’m trying to find the cause and I think that, and I made videos about this on my YouTube channel. It, they became very popular. And I realized, nobody at standard process really knows this mechanism because so many decades had passed.

And so I kinda educated them on what that is. And it really took, it took off and it’s understood now by, I’m going to say thousands or maybe tens of thousands of holistic practitioners. ’cause I’ve talked about this on YouTube and I’ve delivered a lot of seminars on stage talking about lactic acidosis.

So I was doing, okay, so that was January, February of 2016, and then I was doing okay through the summer. And in October I found the mold and I was like, okay, this is it. I gotta, I’m going to have to move out of the office. So I did. And earlier than that, I had sold my house too. I remediated the mold and [00:22:00] then sold it.

So that, that was huge to figure that out. And then in 2024, I had a gas leak in my house. This is my new house. And I didn’t know I had a gas leak. It was the whole year and I had the same symptoms as mold toxicity, left arm numb, left jaw numb, incredible chest pain, high blood pressure, can’t breathe, and I was getting left leg numbness.

I thought I was having strokes. And that was like march, April, may of 2024. It was scary. My body temperature was dropping three degrees below normal. And I was white as a ghost. And in May 20 May 18th, 2024, I’d go to the local hospital, into the ER department, and they lay me out on the bed and they hook me up with all the cords, and then they walk away for lunch.

They didn’t say, we’ll be back in an hour, we’re going to lunch. They didn’t say anything to me, they just walked out for an hour. So I’m there by myself and I’m watching the [00:23:00] monitor. I see myself not breathing. I have about five to eight seconds between respirations and I’m like, okay, what is this? What does this mean?

I’m not breathing. What the heck’s going on? I start like freaking out am I not breathing? I’m trying to process this. I’m like, okay, I just need to relax. I just need to relax. So then I fell asleep, and then the monitor starts beeping red and it says, apnea 20 seconds. And I’m like, oh gosh, I’m not breathing at night.

I don’t think I’m breathing in during the day either. So I started breathing intently for the next 20 minutes and it was difficult. And then I 20 minutes later, the blood pressure, is coming on every 10 minutes. So at 20 minutes, my blood pressure’s totally normal. I walked in high blood pressure.

Then I, then after 20 minutes of intently breathing goes normal. So then they come back from lunch and I show them, Hey, look at the monitor. It says apnea 20 seconds. If I’m not [00:24:00] breathing, does that raise blood pressure? And they said, oh, it just means that the cord fell off or the contact on your skin’s bad.

It’s usually just a bad reading. I was like, no, it’s, no, I think I’m not breathing. I, so I walked outta there after and we did a CT of my brain with the dye contrast. Looking for a stroke and it came back negative. I spent like $10,000 that day in five hours. And but I learned this valuable lesson.

So the, so then I started, so then I’m back at the office and 10 days later there’s, I’m with a patient and she’s at the end of her visit. She goes, look, she goes, I’m very happy ’cause I’ve been taking high dose B one for four months and all of my neuropathy is gone. I was like, wait a minute, I have neuropathy.

Maybe I need high dose B one. So I took the B one high dose and within an hour I was breathing easier and that kept me going through the summer and fall. And then later I found the gas leak. So it’s like the same story with the mold. Like I found a solution that kept me going for a few months and then later I found the [00:25:00] cause and I was able to handle it, permanently.

So these are the stories that kind of form my current situation of like discovery of the mechanism of chronic disease. And the causes of chronic disease and and then later comes the blood test.

David Pasqualone: All right. Oh, go ahead.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah. You want me to keep going?

David Pasqualone: Yeah. No. Absolutely.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Okay, cool.

David Pasqualone: So now you’re learning, you take this vitamin B one, you said?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah, B one.

David Pasqualone: All right. And you just buy it at the grocery store. Do you order it specialty online?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: I have it. I, so in my office we have, there’s 11 of us practitioners. I have a pharm d naturopaths, chiropractors nutritionists. So there’s 11 practitioners. We have 30 staff total. I carry 1200 products.

And so that’s what we do. We heal people with diet and supplements. So I had synthetic B one, I just didn’t understand it, so I started taking it. Within an [00:26:00] hour, I was breathing easier and I walked up to my staff, they’ve been seeing me suffer for months. I’m like, look, I can breathe. I took this B one. Oh my gosh, I can’t believe it.

It’s going to save my life. And within a week I was 90% better. And the numbness took about I still have a little bit left, but I was like 80% better with the numbness. It took that about five months wow. Yeah. So during this time I’m thinking to myself, okay, if I’m going to die. ‘Cause they didn’t know about the gas leak itself.

I said, if I’m going to die, let me, I’m going to take the winter off. So I took three months off work and I went to Florida. My parents have a winter home there and so I was there for, ended up being nine weeks. And I was so in order to do that, I was preparing my house. I put up security cameras. I did a bunch of things for my house to be gone for that long in the wintertime.

And I’m in Michigan, so dealing with snow and all that. So I also repaired some bug screens ’cause I had the hail damage [00:27:00] from a few years earlier. So I got the screens repaired and I was installing one of the bug screens in for the living room. I’m standing outside installing this bug screen and I smelled gas and I looked at my right foot and there’s the gas meter at my right foot.

I bent down, smelled it, and sure enough I could smell a lot of gas. I called the gas company. They came out and they confirmed that it was leaking and they replaced the part that was leaking. That was December 7th, 2024. That’s how I found the gas leak accidentally. I found it accidentally and based on where the, that window is, the wind blows from west to east.

It would blow into the house living room, kitchen, down the hallway, bedrooms, like just filling the whole house with gas. Just a small amount, just enough to not allow me to breathe. Like I would sit at my laptop in the mornings, [00:28:00] typing within 10 minutes, I couldn’t breathe. So that’s how I found it.

So now I’m in Florida. This is January. This is a month later. And I knew about this blood test called MVX plus. I saw it on YouTube and I studied it, and I watched this one video about this test about 10 times. I’m like, this test is amazing. I need to run it on myself. But it wasn’t available. So I called up the NIH because they rented on 30,000 people and they wouldn’t release it, and they told me two reasons why.

Number one, they’re waiting for consensus, which I don’t know what that means. I think that has to do something with a, like a fauci figure. To take over. The other reason

David Pasqualone: means they can’t get profit from it at the government politician level. So they hold on.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah, exactly. And then the other reason they said was because it doesn’t measure disease.

And I said to ’em, I know, I understand. It measures physiology, it measures function. So [00:29:00] another lab that was involved in studying it, they said they didn’t wanna look like voodoo doctors, so they weren’t going to use it even though. In the published re research, they had the math, they had the all of it.

Like you just run it and just easily do it. So the bottom line is in January sixth of 2025, I got somebody to release it and that lab company’s called Professional Co-Op Services. So January 13th, I got my blood drawn. And so this lab gives you an overall score for your health, one to a hundred, and it measures six factors and it does a bunch of math and.

You want your overall score to be low. So my first score in January of 2025 was 55, which is very bad. And I still had heart pain and lung pain and like under the left arm armpit pain from the gas leak. So I was still suffering greatly because I just found the gas leak, December 7th. So one month later I’m [00:30:00] still suffering.

Okay, so then I get my score. It’s 55. And then I didn’t do anything different except I wasn’t breathing in gas and I wa didn’t change my supplements, didn’t change my exercise, and then my next score was 31. So you can correlate your overall score with your chance of mortality for the next five years.

David Pasqualone: And what was the time difference between those two tests?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Four weeks.

David Pasqualone: Four weeks?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah. So you can they, so what, the way that they made this test was. They drew blood on a lot of people and they just waited 10 years to see who would die, and they would look at the blood and see what factors in the blood would predict their mortality.

So the NIH did this on 30,000 people, and then the UK Biobank in England, they did this on about 270,000 people, and the results are always the same. These six factors are the most important [00:31:00] predictors of. Your lifespan in the next five years, they’re not going to tell you that you’re going to die when you’re 97 years old.

What they’re going to tell you is what are your chance of mortality in the next five years? So short term mortality. And so my score went from 55 to, to 31. So that, what that means is that my chance of mortality dropped from 20% to 3%. So I lowered my chance of mortality by 17% just by not breathing in gas.

So the point is, I’ve run this test now over 2000 times in the last year and a half, and this is my career, is to help people live longer and improve their health. And by, not by biohacking, we’re not, doing tricks. What we’re doing is we’re actually repairing the cells and we’re making the cells work really well.

Now, right now there’s a huge like. Push, or not a push, but a trend on biohacking for [00:32:00] longevity. And it’s my attitude is how about just be really healthy and measure the cellular health using MVX plus, and then be healthy and live longer? You can live longer and be unhealthy.

You can be unhealthy and live to be a hundred years old and not feel good. Like medicine, you could argue that, surgeries and drugs are a way to biohack your physiology so that you live longer. You could argue that, but the point is your cells do certain things. They take in nutrients and they expel waste.

If they can’t do that, the, there are these six markers that are measured in MVX plus, and these six markers will tell you what’s wrong, and these are the five topics. That they measure. They measure malnutrition at the cellular level, toxicity, infection, inflammation, and [00:33:00] mitochondrial function. Those five subjects are the basis of cellular health, and if your cells are functioning at a hundred percent, there’s no disease.

It’s impossible to have a disease if your cells are functioning at a hundred percent. So the point is you wanna improve the health of your cells, and if you think taking a pharmaceutical does that, then run MVX plus to verify that. If you think it’s your special mushroom capsule, run MVX plus to verify that anything that you think is beneficial for you run MVX plus to see if it’s working and it’s super cheap.

I charge $49 for it, for the holistic, for the healthcare providers listening, the wholesale price is anywhere from 20 to $30. And then the retail price, like I said, is 49. So I have my patients run this test every two months. [00:34:00] There are other labs that are equivalent, but they don’t give you your overall score and they only me measure methylation.

Which is a chemical process in the cells. You’ve heard of this, right? The biohackers for longevity. There’s several tests that measure what’s called methylation. Yeah. And these tests are, huh?

David Pasqualone: Yeah, I actually have a genetic condition that I found.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah.

David Pasqualone: Where I don’t know what it’s called.

You probably know what it’s called, but my whole life, I’m not a big drinker, but I’ve never been drunk. I don’t even feel a buzz and unless I’m actually, like when I was in the hospital, I had a tumor removed a couple times unless they physically shot me in the vein with Demerol. I’ve never felt any kind of chemical.

So my doctor finally, after all these years a doctor in town found out that I had something and they said that there was a blood brain barrier and that I was actually really deficient in [00:35:00] a lot of nutrients. And so that explained a lot about the stuff that I was experiencing.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: So your blood-brain barrier is very strong and it won’t allow nutrients into your brain, you mean?

Or.

David Pasqualone: Yeah, I guess that’s what’s happening. Yeah. So it causes, it caused I am actually, originally, I took a supplement. And then I stopped taking it. But I’ve been much better just after being on it, like six months. But to this day, like I could, again, I don’t drink, I don’t advocate drinking, but I’d watch everybody drink and oh, I took a drink and I feel something.

I’m like, I could take 10 shots in a row and feel absolutely nothing. So I didn’t drink anyways and it saved me a ton of money, but I don’t know the science behind it. I just know that I had a lot of questions and my whole life I kept telling doctors, I’m like, I think I have some kind of autoimmune disease, or some kind of like issue.

And then this doctor actually found it on her own because I was telling her some of the things I was experiencing. So that’s why I always thought I wish I could just get a [00:36:00] nutrient to feed my brain.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Okay. Regarding these longevity tests, they could be hun, $300, and higher for sure, $700.

But with MDX Plus, it’s not only is it much, much cheaper, but it’s more holistic. ’cause these bigger tests, they’re measuring methylation, which is one biochemical process. It does a lot of things. It does a lot of detoxing and stuff. But when you’re measuring cellular health, that’s more important than just simply meth methylation.

Anyway

David Pasqualone: but do they abbreviate that test? MTH, like mothers and MTHR?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: No, that’s the, yeah, the M-T-H-F-R genetic SNP is a problem that 60% of Americans have, and it can lead to a variety of changes that occur in symptoms, a variety of symptoms. And there are blood tests for that, but

David Pasqualone: Okay.

That’s the one I had done. It was like, I remember it was a few back, it was 300 bucks and I remember running it and the fa like [00:37:00] factory, whatever you call it, the lab, they actually had here’s normal, here’s low, here’s severely deficient. They put an asterisk next to mine and they said they’ve only had a handful of patients that’s ever got that.

It means it’s so deficient they couldn’t register it properly.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: So did somebody. Yeah. Did somebody talk to you then about taking a methylated B vitamin complex?

David Pasqualone: No, I actually meth, like I said, I took some kind of kale supplement and I took it for six months and then I looked at the ingredients one day.

I’m like, they said this was all natural, but there’s a bunch of crap in it too, so if you have a good solution, I’m all ears, man.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah, the solution is really simple. There’s several, there’s a lot of different solutions. It’s basically, it is called a methylated B vitamin. I can give you my favorite is called methyl B12 liposomal spray.

So you can type that. Yeah, I write that down. Methyl B12 liposomal spray. And the company that makes it is called Ika, P-H-Y-S-I-C-A. [00:38:00] And

David Pasqualone: what I’ll do, ladies in general, I’ll put a link in the show notes. To obviously our guest, but also to anything he recommends primarily through his website or through outside sources if he doesn’t offer it.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah, mother nature shop.com is my retail website for,

David Pasqualone: all right, so now you’re finding these tests and you get a test. You originally score 55, then in four weeks you’re at 31. Right? Tickets from there to today.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: So that was over a year ago. And the point is maintaining a healthy score. So I was doing quite well at the beginning of the summer of 2025 with my scores.

And then I got some, I think I got some kind of organism, maybe it was a little bit of a Lyme disease organism in the summer. And then my leg started feeling heavy and weak and set, and my scores went back up. So then I had to tackle that and bring that [00:39:00] back down. And that’s the point of this test is that it’ll find infections.

It’ll find toxicity. It’ll find malnutrition, and then you address it. It’ll tell you the most important thing to address. As an example, I have a patient, she, in the fall of 2024, she had c diff and she was about ready to die. So the doctors had to give her IV antibiotics for six weeks, and they saved her life.

Yeah.

David Pasqualone: And hey, just so you go on you’re for our listeners all over the world, even within the United States, CIFF c Difficile, and it causes like extreme diarrhea, correct?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah.

David Pasqualone: Just so you know. So you are so like you’re just flushing through your, it’s painful in your intestines. You’re constantly pooping.

It comes out like water, and you just feel like crap. You’re dehydrated and it can actually, the extreme cases can kill you because you dehydrate yourself from the inside out and you lose all your nutrients. Is that a right summary, or is there anything you need to adjust?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: No, that’s [00:40:00] right. So she came to me in the spring of 2025 as a new patient.

And she kept saying, I have residual c diff, re residual c diff. And she was underweight, she was losing her hair, low energy, and she looked pale. So we ran MVX plus, and of the six markers, the one for infection and inflammation was low. It was fine, but the ones for malnutrition were bad. So I said to her and her brother was in the room, and they’re both like in their late sixties, early seventies.

So I said to her, it’s not c diff, look at these scores. Your problem is you’re malnourished. And her brother said to her and point and was mad and was like, yeah, because you eat sugar every day and you’re not eating enough protein. And that clicked in her mind and she changed her diet and then two months later she put the weight back on.

Her hair quit falling out, her energy came back up ’cause she quit the sugar [00:41:00] and started eating more meat. So MVX plus directed our care. I have another patient she’s been seeing me for years. We got an MVX plus on her and the greatest problem was she’s toxic with heavy metals and chemicals and it showed up on the test.

And so I had her do a bigger panel, the $700 chemical metal test and it, and she had a ton of toxins and I had her do another test for coagula, coagulation. She had 11 outta 13 problems showing thick blood and, possible stroke, possible plaing in the arteries. And so we had to address that.

And again, it’s the supplements that fix these things. And she’s asking me she asked me the question why do I have to buy these expensive tests when my husband does not have to buy the expensive test? And I said, because MVX tells us, [00:42:00] like her overall score was like 68. It was terribly high and she’s in her eighties.

So anyways, a year goes by, we ran re reran MVX twice more. It went from 68 to 63, and now it’s 57. So we have objective proof. She will live longer and that she’s healthier. And it’s taken a year or just over a year. Of her detox. And that’s what it takes to detox. It takes a long time to detox, but you gotta put the time in, so that’s the awesome part about this test is like any therapy can be validated.

And if you think you have, whatever disease X and you run MVX plus, it’ll tell you why. It’ll tell you is are you malnourished? Do you have toxicity? Do you have organisms? Do you have mitochondrial dysfunction? What’s the story behind the symptoms and the story behind the diagnosis? When it was released in [00:43:00] May of 2020, when the when the video about it was first released in May of 2024 Dr.

Bill Cromwell, one of the researchers involved with it he said, MVX plus measures the soil upon which disease grows. We’re measuring the soil, like the terrain of the body.

David Pasqualone: So if someone wanted to take a test, where do they go? What’s the process?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: There’s two ways. If your doctor has an account with LabCorp they just order it.

It’s test number 1, 2 3 6 0 1. And if your doctor does not have an account, refuses to get one, refuses to order the test, doesn’t know anything about it. They can order it straight from my office website in the upper right corner of it button. So the office website is the N HCA aa.com, which stands for the Nutritional Healing Center, Ann Arbor.[00:44:00]

So the NHCA a.com. And then upper right corner says MVX test. Just click on that and fill out the form, and then somebody from my office will reach out.

David Pasqualone: You and I, ladies and gentlemen, for this podcast, guests apply and then we have a pre-call and then so they wait for that and then they sign up for the show and they wait for that.

Now that we’re talking, I actually think, I remember in the pre-call you and I talking about this and someone called me back and I got so busy that I completely forgot until right now. So I thought

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: for you to do the test.

David Pasqualone: Yeah, I think I was going to do the test before the show so we could talk about my results.

And I absolutely spaced it till this moment, so I apologize. Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t have my blood test ready for you. And Darren also for not getting that done. I, somebody did call me back and then I just never followed through. I absolutely forgot.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah, I thought we were going to do that. Go over [00:45:00] your blood work.

David Pasqualone: Yeah, so when we can do a follow up episode and do that, I’ll get on it after this show, we’ll go ahead and get that scheduled or whatever we need to do. And then how, what is the process like? You got somebody in Minnesota, you got somebody in Canada, you got somebody in New Guinea. How, what’s the process to get these blood tests?

Can any lab draw it or do you send a kit? What is it? How does it work?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Unfortunately it’s only available in the United States.

David Pasqualone: Okay.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah. Okay. And it’s at LabCorp, which has 2300 locations. Just go on their website to find your nearest location.

David Pasqualone: And you said test 1 2 3 6 0 1.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah, it’s called MVX plus.

There’s one called MVX. Don’t do that one. It’s called. The one you want is MVX plus. And so you just go fast in the morning, you have to fast 10 to 12 hours and just get your blood drawn and it’s one vial. Very simple.

David Pasqualone: But M like Michael, V for victory. X as in X-ray plus,

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: [00:46:00] yeah. It stands for Metabolic Vulnerability Index, MVX.

David Pasqualone: But if they go through you, they not only get the results, but they get analysis from you.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: No, they just get the results.

David Pasqualone: Okay.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: And we send a video with me describing how to read it and if they want more, they can we have a service for that

David Pasqualone: book. A consult.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah.

David Pasqualone: Okay, so ladies, and then what we’ll do is I’ll go like always, I’ll be the human Guinea pig.

I’ll get this done, and then maybe Darren and I, we can get it on a show. We go through the results on camera, and then people can understand what to expect when they not only get the results from you or they book it through you, but then they book a consult. Does that sound good?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah, sounds great.

David Pasqualone: Awesome. Awesome. So between now and then, Darren, if somebody wants to get ahold of you, what’s the best way to reach out and contact you?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: The best way is through the website. Honestly, it’s call the office in Michigan, (734) 302-7575. [00:47:00] And I I got so busy last year when it got released and then I came home from the Florida trip.

I was so slammed with like new patients ’cause it’s really exciting and awesome. I quit taking new patients in June, but then I just restarted. This month I’m taking new patients again, and then I have 10 other practitioners and I charge more than they do. My fee is much higher than theirs by double.

So there’s a couple different pricing options, depending on your house, depending on your wallet, yeah.

David Pasqualone: Awesome. Awesome. So ladies and gentlemen, like our slogan says Listen. Do. Repeat. For Life!. Everything that Dr. Schmidt and I talked about today, you’re your own person, do your own research, a lot of what the government says is not true and they know it.

A lot of what doctors and physicians say is not true. Sometimes they know it. Sometimes they’re just. Brainwashed by the pharmaceutical industry. You can go back and [00:48:00] research to the Rockefellers guy has poison, he doesn’t know what to do with it. So he gets a deal with the pharmaceutical companies and we’re injecting it on all our veins through vaccines.

So our system has been completely corrupted. Our food supply has been just contaminated. And if you just wanna start in something easy, cut out sugar. Alright. I know when I was dying, when I was 18, I had a tumor growing like a weed in me. They took it out, AC grew back, they took it out, it grew back. I had a radiation.

You know what God used to heal me. I cut out sugar, I cut out dairy, cut out pastas. ’cause the what’s in the pasta as much as I la pasta, it turns to sugar in your body after when you’re digesting it. I did that and then the tumor just started shrinking. So this is not new knowledge. Like Darren said, you can go back to old medical books, and they knew all this a hundred years ago, but then somebody got the eraser out and just started wiping this knowledge.

So we’re [00:49:00] dependent on doctors, we’re dependent on the medical industry, and we’re dependent on pharmaceutical products, which none of it helps. So I’m going to get this blood test if you want to feel free to try reach out to Darren and Darren before we end this episode. Thank you for being here today. Is there any other closing thoughts or anything even off topic that we haven’t discussed that you’d like to share?

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: Yeah, it’s just there’s a difference between the acute care medical model versus the chronic disease, health improvement model. So in the acute care situation, there’s specialists and you take your symptoms to them and they do blood work, but only for their specialty, and they put you on a drug.

Then you go to another specialist, do the same thing. They do the differential diagnosis procedure, put you on another drug. Okay, now you’re depressed. We see psychiatrist. Now you’re on two more drugs. Once you’re on five drugs. That’s called polypharmacy. And the science shows that your risk of mortality goes up.

Because [00:50:00] of being on multiple drugs. That’s the, and so medicine is so good at acute care, they apply that to chronic illness, but it doesn’t work that way. So with chronic illness, the best test is MVX plus, like we discussed. And then there’s I, in my career, I created what I call the seven step blueprint to optimal health.

So there’s seven steps to reverse chronic illness, and it just, that was 2018. It turns out that MVX plus. Totally correlates with the seven steps to improve your health. So se you use MVX plus to measure and then the seven steps to do it’s not like you need, you don’t need to have 20 different diagnoses to start to reverse your chronic illness.

There’s only seven steps to do it’s a totally different model. And I, as I speak to different doctors, like this weekend I spoke to 80 chiropractors for four hours. For a month ago, I spoke to 180 biological dentists. The week before that, I spoke to 250 [00:51:00] naturopaths. Last year I spoke to over 2000 doctors.

I spoke to 80 medical doctors in August, and it was a huge hit. It’s a great, it’s a whole new philosophy. It’s a whole new way of looking at healthcare. It’s a bit, it’s quite revolutionary, so I’m spreading the good word about this because it’s not about that one diagnosis. It’s not about that one pill.

That one diet, that one treatment. It’s a series of steps that you take over time. And it could take a year, it could take two years or more, but you do these seven steps over time and it, that’s how you get your health bag

David Pasqualone: a hundred percent. And ladies and gentlemen, it’s like you cut your arm. It takes a split second to cut your arm, but then it takes time to heal.

So you gotta give your body time to heal. And then I do want to clarify, I’m not against natural sugar. If you an apple, God made you, God made that apple, it’s going to process. But I’m talking about eating the sugary crap that they put in our food. So I just want to clarify to anybody out there, [00:52:00] and again, I eat sugar again now.

When I had the tumor, I had to get off sugar for five years to allow my body to heal. And that’s what I believe. I don’t wanna talk to you, doc, but that’s what you’re saying is give your body time to heal and then you can reintroduce things if you’d like to.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: And the time to heal. Some people have parasites and it takes six months.

Other people have toxins and it can take a year or two years to get all the toxins out. Everybody’s different. Some people heal. Some people go through the seven steps in six, six months, and they’re good. Other people have taken three years to get ’em through that.

David Pasqualone: All right, so ladies and gentlemen, pray research like our slogan says Listen.

Do. Repeat. For Life!. Listen to this great information. Do what you know you need to do. Repeat it form good habits each day so you can have a great life in this world. But more importantly, attorney to come. So this is one of the only episodes we’ve done in nine years. We’re going to have a two part series. Listen to this, share it, and come back and check out part two.

I’ll put a [00:53:00] link in the show notes here, so if you’re listening to this six months from now, both episodes will be ready. That’s it. Darren, thank you again for being here today, brother.

Darren Schmidt, D.C., P.L.C.: You’re welcome. Thank you for having me.

David Pasqualone: Ladies and gentlemen, we love you. Have a great day. We’ll see you in the next episode.
